Marketing – where to begin? How many of the entrepreneurs among us break out into a cold sweat when thinking about how to market their business? For many business owners, it can feel like an overwhelming task.
This week, executive coaching entrepreneur and author Tammy Holyfield, shares five tips for getting started. As it turns out, several of today’s best marketing solutions are right in the palms of our hands: smartphone marketing. From apps to attitude, Tammy’s advice on smartphone marketing is a must read.
What is Smartphone Marketing?
Mobile marketing focuses on reaching people through their phones or tablets. Use mobile devices wisely, and you’ll tap into a huge audience. Think of those ads you see while playing a game or scrolling through an app—that’s mobile marketing.
Why does this matter? Over half of all internet traffic now comes from mobile devices. That’s a big deal. Ignoring this trend? Your marketing efforts might be falling short, letting potential leads scroll right past.
Unlike traditional marketing, which relies on billboards or TV commercials, mobile marketing allows brands to connect with people directly and instantly. It’s part of a broader set of marketing channels but stands out for its immediacy. Sure, it’s not perfect. Maybe some users ignore the ads, or they’re put off by pop-ups. But that’s marketing—trial and error. Want to stay relevant? Use mobile as part of your strategy and meet your audience where they already are: in the palm of their hands.

Benefits of Mobile Marketing
Mobile marketing is everywhere. But why does it matter? Let’s explore six practical benefits.
Cost-Effectiveness
Here’s the kicker: mobile marketing won’t empty your wallet. Compared to TV or print ads, it’s like buying coffee with spare change instead of splurging on a 5-star meal. Every dollar counts more since mobile ads are laser-focused. And with options like SMS, social ads, or push notifications, you can choose what fits your budget. Fancy campaigns? Not needed.
Increased Engagement
Think about it—how often do you check your phone? Exactly. Our phones are personal, making mobile marketing feel one-on-one. Push notifications, tailored ads, or even a catchy video make you stop scrolling. Did you know over 50% of YouTube views come from phones? The late-night scroll between 8 pm and midnight? That’s prime time. Mobile marketing doesn’t just reach users; it blends into their routines.
Easy Access
Here’s the beauty of it: mobile marketing works for everyone, from startups to corner cafes. It’s not about fancy tools; it’s about smart, accessible mobile marketing strategies. You don’t need a big budget. Try a simple text message campaign or a few targeted social ads. You can tweak, test, and adjust as you go. For small businesses? A game-changer. It’s like competing in a race where everyone has the same shoes.
Direct Communication
Direct communication is one of mobile marketing’s biggest strengths—but is it always perfect? Probably not. Think about notifications or messages popping up on your phone. They’re hard to ignore, right? That’s the beauty of it. Businesses can send messages directly to your device, making sure you see them. It’s personal, almost intimate. But here’s the catch: how many notifications do you swipe away without reading? Direct doesn’t always mean effective.
Location-Based Targeting
Ever walked by a coffee shop and suddenly got a coupon on your mobile phone? That’s location-based targeting in action. By using geofencing, marketers can connect with people when they’re in the right place—like malls or stadiums. It’s clever, sure. But what if it feels a bit… invasive? While 70% of fast-food mobile marketing campaigns use this, one question sticks: does being in the “right place” mean someone actually cares?
Shareability and Virality
Virality is tricky. It’s not something you can fully plan for—just ask anyone who’s tried to “make something go viral.” Sure, quirky humor or a timely meme can spread like wildfire. But remember the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge? It wasn’t just funny; it had meaning. Social media thrives on these moments. But let’s be honest—how many campaigns miss the mark entirely? The line between viral and forgettable is razor-thin.

Types of Mobile Marketing
Below are the top 7 types of mobile marketing
SMS Marketing
SMS marketing is all about sending short, snappy marketing messages to customers who’ve opted in. Sounds simple, right? Well, it is—and it isn’t. It’s great for things like last-minute promotions or appointment reminders because it’s direct and quick. Plus, links make it easy for users to act on the spot. But remember, legal compliance matters. Without user consent or opt-out options, that “simple” message could cause big problems.
Social Media Marketing
By 2025, social media platforms will feel like the Wild West of marketing—AI-driven, fast-paced, and mobile-first. TikTok trends today, something new tomorrow. For brands, it’s a chance to connect, comment, and build trust. Organic posts sound nice, but let’s face it—ads like promoted pins or boosted posts get results faster. The tricky part? Balancing creativity with targeting. Do we focus on likes or conversions? Maybe a bit of both.
Location-Based Marketing
Imagine getting a discount notification just as you walk past your favorite coffee shop. That’s location-based marketing in action. It’s all about being timely and relevant, especially for local businesses. But here’s the catch: it works best when it feels helpful, not intrusive. Done right, it’s genius. Done poorly, it’s spammy. Finding that balance? That’s where the magic happens.
Proximity Marketing
Proximity marketing in 2025 will see innovations with 5G connectivity, allowing for even faster and more accurate ad delivery through Bluetooth and other near-field communication technologies.
One example of this is beacon marketing, which relies on physical Bluetooth-enabled devices in or near stores. These send short-range signals to mobile devices, which people see when they are near your location. This is another proven way to drive foot traffic.
### In-App Marketing
Marketing through apps—sounds seamless, right? But is it really? Sure, it’s all about reaching users where they already are. Ads, sponsored posts, or even cross-promotions right inside a mobile app seem like a no-brainer. But let’s be honest—getting users to download your app in the first place isn’t easy. Still, when done well, app-based marketing delivers tailored content that feels personal, boosting engagement and maybe even conversions. Worth a shot?
Email Marketing
Email marketing—does it still work in the age of TikTok and Instagram reels? Surprisingly, yes! Think of it like catching up with an old friend. Emails let businesses stay in touch, dropping updates, offers, or even helpful advice straight into inboxes. But here’s the catch: too pushy, and users hit “unsubscribe.” Striking a balance between value and promotion is key. Done right, email marketing feels less like spam and more like a conversation.
In-Game Marketing
Mobile gaming—now that’s a world full of possibilities. Ever noticed those banner ads or quick video clips while gaming? They’re everywhere. In-game ads blend into the experience, grabbing attention without breaking the fun (well, most of the time). But let’s face it, not all gamers love them. Still, with mobile gaming’s huge target audience, it’s a way to reach users where they’re already engaged. A win-win, or just a gamble?
5 Tips to Begin Smartphone Marketing Your Business
Marketing has never been easier. We have all the resources we need at our fingertips, literally! It’s just a matter of dedicating the time and effort to creating content. Here are five tips you can start using today to get yourself closer to effectively smartphone marketing your business.
1. Stories on Instagram
Stories are a great way to engage your audience in an authentic and connected way. Give your audience and followers a little insight from behind-the-scenes projects that you are working on. There is always something that you can exclusively share with ONLY your followers. What’s really cool? After 24 hours, it disappears! It gives your audience a sense of urgency to always check out your story and keep them engaged. A little tip behind stories: the more your audience watches your stories, the more often your photos show up on their feed. Give it a try.
2. Google Apps
Google created Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. This triplet empowers us to not only access our documents conveniently through our Google accounts but also easily share documents and content (of any kind) with colleagues or clients to review, contribute, or collaborate. The applications are endless, but I enjoy using Google Docs to begin writing blogs while traveling or waiting for a friend before dinner. Google Docs saves it where you left off in real-time. You can pick it up from any other device you use to log in.
3. Canva
Canva is a creative tool that allows you to create marketing material online. This tool is so powerful it’s impossible to share all the awesome things you can potentially create. Canva offers a free and paid version, but the free version is surprisingly robust. I often use Canva to create picture quotes for Instagram. They already have all the dimensions that I need for everything, and they allow me to save my logo and drop it into every new piece I create.
4. Be Authentic
The hardest part about marketing your own business can be finding the confidence to put original content out into the world. Often, the fear is whether or not people will like your creations. However, if you don’t put anything out there, you will never know what your audience likes or doesn’t… and it will remain a question you ask yourself forever. The first step is to just do it and be yourself.
5. Groups on Facebook
Creating a unique community connected directly with you and/or your company gives people the opportunity to engage in a more personal way. You may want to be a little strategic as you are creating your group. You’ll benefit from giving some thought to the type of content you want to provide, what the group’s members can expect, and what your intentions will be over the long run.
This Facebook app is an awesome tool to post directly from your phone. You can share Facebook LIVE events with only your members, you can plan in-person and virtual events, and even start a poll to get your clients’ opinions in real time. The opportunities are endless with Groups on Facebook!
Mobile Marketing vs Digital Marketing
Digital marketing—ever thought about how it sneaks into your life? It’s all about connecting with people through websites, social media, ads, and email. But here’s the twist: mobile marketing, a part of this, focuses on reaching you on your phone. Scrolling Instagram? Checking emails on the go? That’s where mobile marketing quietly steps in.
FAQs
How successful is mobile marketing?
Mobile advertising can be incredibly effective, but is it always the best choice? Most internet traffic comes from mobile users, so it seems obvious, right? Yet, reaching people on the go isn’t always simple. Delivering quality ads that actually engage takes effort—like catching someone’s attention in a crowded room. Are we doing enough?
What are examples of mobile marketing?
Think about SMS promotions, in-app ads, or those tailored Instagram posts you swipe past. Each is crafted to grab your glance—but do they always work? Sometimes, they blend into the scroll unnoticed. Mobile marketing walks a fine line between relevance and interruption, asking, “How do we stay engaging without overstepping?”
What are the problems with mobile marketing?
Mobile marketing isn’t without its hurdles. Think about it—countless devices, screen sizes, operating systems. It’s a balancing act. Miss the mark on optimization? You risk slow loading, awkward formatting, or a clunky user experience. Ever abandoned a page that wouldn’t load? Exactly.
